The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
