The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
