Teenager Found Dead After False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old boy was found dead only a few days following being wrongly blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The inquest heard how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The message added: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later concluded the alleged burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was not taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged taken ashes generated online responses, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really distressing", she said.
Mental Health Effect
She added that her son had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the family by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had gone into the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing heard from school personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the educator said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his family said they never receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner informed the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young child.
"Likely untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"During 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and following his questioning he was released whilst inquiries proceeded."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to discern his intent."
