Pat Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Initiating Derogatory Songs About Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has signed with the Championship side only half a year after leading derogatory songs aimed at their manager, Chris Wilder.
This experienced forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal joining the Championship strugglers through the winter. Bamford's lengthy spell at Elland Road was ended through agreement in August.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds involved leading offensive songs regarding Chris Wilder amid Leeds' promotion celebrations this spring. Now, the former England player is set to play for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to pull the team he loves away from the drop zone.
Past History Involving the Striker and the Manager
Both men had history before Leeds earned promotion back to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder called Bamford as “a muppet” back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won automatic promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends & Looking Ahead
Everything seems to have been resolved with United, the league's least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement up front while Bamford hoping to revive his playing days.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. An apologetic Patrick along with Leeds boss, Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Wilder said back then: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I have no issue at all with it. I'm uncertain about the language from a fellow professional! But I valued and admired him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke too and we had a half-hour chat together and he is a great person, a class act. When I was playing we used to give it and take it and that is part and parcel of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I am cool with it and I told him that to Pat.”
Recent Playing Challenges
Bamford featured in 18 games with Leeds United in the previous campaign but the ex- Forest, Chelsea & Middlesbrough player has struggled with fitness issues in recent years.
