We are analyzing images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the images were from was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
